A new generation of Perkins marine engines is entering operational testing at the Port of Rijeka and BU Power Systems, the authorised Perkins distributor, is proud to support this significant project.
While such upgrades are typically part of ongoing fleet investments, this collaboration between the Port of Rijeka and Perkins, a Caterpillar company, stands out. Two of the port’s mooring and unmooring vessels will soon be equipped with newly developed Perkins diesel engines. Following extensive factory testing, they are now entering a one-year operational trial under real-world port conditions.
Miroslav Ćirić, Managing Director of BU Power Systems from Viškovo, explains:
“These 200 hp diesel engines have been designed in full compliance with the latest environmental regulations, particularly regarding exhaust emissions, and are intended specifically for workboat applications. Following extensive factory testing, the Port of Rijeka’s mooring and unmooring vessels were identified as the perfect partner and test platform, allowing performance evaluation under all operating conditions.”
Robert Stijelja, Head of the Mooring and Unmooring Service at the Port of Rijeka, adds:
“We are proud that the Port of Rijeka’s Mooring and Unmooring Service has been recognised by the globally renowned Caterpillar Marine Power, and that our workboats have been selected to test the operational performance of this new generation of diesel engines. We believe this cooperation will further enhance our operational efficiency and contribute to the continued optimisation of our services across all port basins, from Raša to the LNG terminal in Omišalj.”
The Port of Rijeka operates a fleet of eight vessels, carrying out over 1,800 operations per year. This environment offers the ideal conditions to test and validate the new engine technology in daily use a practical step towards more sustainable and efficient marine operations.
