The 47th WorldSkills Championships will be held in Lyon, France, from 10 to 15 September 2024. More than 1,500 participants from 5 continents and 89 WorldSkills member countries are expected to compete in more than 60 skills. Lyon will be hosting the WorldSkills Championships for the second time since 1995. The organisers are expecting around 250,000 visitors and around 2,500 volunteers to support the event.
We are proud to have been able to accompany two Polish students in their preparations for the competition. The eighteen-year-old Jakub Netter, who passed his Polish “Matura” this year and is planning to start studies in a technical field at University of Life Sciences in Poznań, Poland, in October, qualified to take part in the current WorldSkills Lyon 2024 in the ‘Heavy Vehicle Technology’ category. Here, technicians for the maintenance of heavy vehicles are expected to be able to work with combustion engines and components. This requires knowledge of a variety of specialised tools such as heavy equipment and power tools to diagnose problems, make adjustments and repair faults. The work often needs to be carried out quickly and to strict safety standards if vital production time is not to be lost. The technician often works alone and is the link between the employer, the customer and the manufacturer and may involve a degree of seniority at the highest level of performance.
Marek Wiącek, Jakub’s training coordinator, is already an experienced competitor at both EuroSkills and WorldSkills. At the last WorldSkills in Salzburg, Austria, Marek achieved 7th place in his category and was only a few points behind 3rd place. Marek is now the coordinator supporting Jakub at the WorldSkills Championships in France.
In order to prepare for the high requirements of the competition, Jakub and Marek completed a training at BU Power Systems Polska at the end of August. Our training included the disassembly of a Perkins 900 series engine, advanced measurements of selected technical parameters and the reassembly of the engine. ‘All work was carried out in accordance with Perkins’ technical documentation and under the supervision of experienced BU Power Systems service technician Tomasz Łowczyk. I believe that such initiatives are very good and deserve some time to be devoted to them. The positive attitude and commitment of young people should be recognised; as well as the desire to gain knowledge and new and practical skills in the technical field and beyond,’ says Mariusz Kowalewski, Service Manager at BU Power Systems. ‘The two of them have done a great job and I am convinced that they will be well prepared for the competition. We’re keeping our fingers crossed,’ says Tomasz Łowczyk.
